Generally referred to as ''eel-skin rigs,'' these devices are available commercially. The Red Top was recently badly damaged by a fire but should be back in business in early August. Even before World War II, eel skins were used to adorn the classic, and first, striped bass surf-casting lure, the block tin squid, or jig.
A few striped-bass anglers continue to use them on lures of similar design. These lures are the elongated affairs, usually made of lead plated with chrome, with a single tail hook and a keel-shaped bottom. One simply slides a skin of proper size over the lure, makes a hole for the hook to emerge and fastens the skin at the forward end with nylon line or thread. A few inches of the eel's tail should hang beyond the hook.
Surf-casting plugs designed expressly for stripers did not appear until the 's, and it was not long before some of them were also adorned with eel skins, a practice followed today by a few anglers. Fitting an eel skin to a plug - a surface-swimming Atom or Danny plug is often used for this - is time-consuming.
One must first remove the plug's hooks. Next choose an eel skin large enough for the job. The section of the skin that goes on the plug is what is behind the eel's vent. For the largest of the aforementioned plugs, one needs the skin from an eel that is about three feet long. The skin is worked over the hookless plug as far as it will go, leaving, as with the aforementioned metal jig or squid, two, three or four inches of tail extending beyond the lure.
The skin is held in place just behind the plug's swimming lip with a rubber band. New hooks are then installed because the eyes of the old ones will either break or be seriously weakened by the opening and closing process. Its definately not a magical lure. Of course it works, but it needs to be used in a situation where it's appropriate. Make sense? For instance, bad comparison alert it's like Trending News.
